  • Photoemission studies in the pseudogap state of a cuprate superconductor show differences depending on whether a particle is added or removed, revealing broken translational symmetry. Moreover, this particle–hole asymmetry coincides with the opening of the pseudogap. In conventional superconductors, a gap exists in the energy absorption spectrum only below the transition temperature (Tc), corresponding to the price to pay in energy for breaking a Cooper pair of electrons and creating two excited states. In high-Tc cuprate superconductors above Tc but below a temperature T*, an energy gap called the pseudogap1 exists, and is controversially attributed either to pre-formed superconducting pairs, which would show particle–hole symmetry, or to competing phases that would typically break it. Scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) studies suggest that the pseudogap stems from lattice translational symmetry breaking2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 and is associated with a different characteristic spectrum for adding or removing electrons (particle–hole asymmetry; refs 2, 3). However, no signature of either energy or spatial symmetry breaking of the pseudogap has previously been observed by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,18 (ARPES).   • In taxonomy, sheep are classified as Artiodactyla, Ruminantinae, and Bovidae (1). They are widely disseminated over the world due to their importance in animal husbandry. China has an abundance of sheep breed resources, including 42 native breeds (2). The Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia region in China stands out due to its distinct geographical environment and extensive history of sheep breeding. According to statistics, the number of sheep in the region has reached 41.845 million,1 and the breeding methods are diverse, covering traditional free-range and large-scale breeding. However, this breeding model may also provide diverse environmental conditions for the spread and mutation of viruses (3–5). Existing research has primarily concentrated on the detection of particular common viruses, with no systematic investigation of the more complex and diverse viral communities and their properties that may occur in sheep.   • In magnetic multilayer systems, a large spin-orbit coupling at the interface between heavy metals and ferromagnets can lead to intriguing phenomena such as the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, the spin Hall effect, the Rashba effect, and especially the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya (IDM) interaction. This interfacial nature of the IDM interaction has been recently revisited because of its scientific and technological potential. Here we demonstrate an experimental technique to straightforwardly observe the IDM interaction, namely Brillouin light scattering. The non-reciprocal spin wave dispersions, systematically measured by Brillouin light scattering, allow not only the determination of the IDM energy densities beyond the regime of perpendicular magnetization but also the revelation of the inverse proportionality with the thickness of the magnetic layer, which is a clear signature of the interfacial nature. Altogether, our experimental and theoretical approaches involving double time Green's function methods open up possibilities for exploring magnetic hybrid structures for engineering the IDM interaction.
